The Brazilian media continues to report Southampton’s interest in signing Wellington.
Last week, it was UOL who said the Saints are one of the many clubs who have been in touch with the player’s entourage lately.
Now it’s time for O Dia to say the same. The English side continue to be the only side named in the race, despite the chase from several Brazilian clubs last year.
The newspaper features some quotes from Wellington’s agent Marcelo Robalinho, who confirms that there are Premier League clubs who want the signing.
“We are receiving several approaches for Wellington, we’ll decide soon,” Marcelo Robalinho told O Dia.
“But every day new possibilities arise and this ends up being great for the athlete, not only from the market point of view, but for self-esteem, to see how much clubs like him around the world, including from the Premier League.”
Wellington is a free agent following the end of this contract with Athletico Paranaense last year. He’s currently training on his own in Rio de Janeiro.
His appearances for the club in the Copa Libertadores not only make him a wanted player, but should also open doors for him in case of a transfer to the Premier League, since that would help him get a work permit.
However, Southampton getting a 29-year-old who’s never left Brazilian football still looks like a very unusual signing.
