According to Fanatik, Fenerbahce wanted to sign former AC Milan defender Gabriel Paletta in the last window, but they couldn’t bring in the Argentine because the club were unable to cancel Vincent Janssen’s loan agreement with Tottenham Hotspur.

Following an injury to Martin Skrtel and Luis Neto, the Turkish side only have one senior central defender available, and manager Aykut Kocaman demanded a new one before the deadline.

After AC Milan cancelled Paletta’s contract, the experienced Italian defender then became a target for Fenerbahce, but they need to offload Janssen due to having too many foreign players in the squad, and the fact he’s also ruled out with injury.

The Turkish club agreed on terms with Paletta and then reportedly called Tottenham to cancel Janssen’s contract.

However, Tottenham rejected Fenerbahce’s demands to allow Janssen an early return to England, especially on deadline day.

With Fernando Llorente providing back up to Harry Kane, Tottenham didn’t need to bring back Janssen, so the Dutchman will now see out the season in Turkey.

Given Janssen’s injury situation, with a toe problem proving much more serious than initially thought, Tottenham were always unlikely to take the player back, when instead they can see Fenerbahce pay his wages for the rest of the season.
