Club need ‘financial engineering’ to sign Arsenal man despite agreement for permanent transfer

Fluminense are unlikely to make Marquinhos’ move from Arsenal permanent in the coming months, despite an agreement being in place for the loanee.

That’s according to RTI Esporte, who say it would take a degree of ‘financial engineering’ for the 21-year-old to join the Brazilian club permanently.

They report that Marquinhos has a ‘remote chance’ of staying at Fluminense in 2025, with his loan deal set to expire next month.

There is an option to turn that permanent included in the loan deal with Arsenal and RTI report that this is valued at €10m. That sum includes transfer fees, staff commission and bonuses.

The question is whether Fluminense can afford it. On the face of it, it appears that they cannot. That €10m fee is considered outside of their ‘financial reality’ and they would need to do some ‘financial engineering’ to make it happen.

That’s because the club’s finances have been hit by eliminations from the Copa Libertadores da América, Copa do Brasil and Campeonato Carioca and their poor performances in Série A of the Brazilian Championship.

There’s also the fact that Marquinhos has not been impressing, finding himself on the bench after the arrival of Mano Menezes as coach.

Thus, Fluminense are yet to seek any talks with Arsenal over a permanent move, despite that agreement for €10m being in place.
