Loris Karius spent two years at Newcastle United before leaving them as a free agent in the summer.

He hasn’t yet found a new club since leaving Newcastle. The 31-year-old was a guest on Sky Deutschland‘s Triple – der Schüttflix Fußballtalk, discussing his situation since leaving the Magpies.

The former Newcastle goalkeeper has explained it’s been difficult for him to be without a club.

“This is certainly not an easy situation at the moment. Being without a club as a player is one of the worst things, but I take it relatively calmly because I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my career. So, I can deal with the situation quite well, even if I would of course wish it were different,” he said.

Earlier this year, the German had given former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who is an agent now, a mandate to help him find a club in Italy. Karius’ partner, Diletta Leotta, was hopeful he could join Monza or Como 1907 in the summer window.

He reportedly came close to joining Cesc Fàbregas’ side, but the deal didn’t take shape. Como ended up signing Emil Audero and Pepe Reina as the two goalkeepers in the last window.

The ex-Newcastle man was recently linked with a move to Barcelona, after Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury. The La Liga side ended up signing Wojciech Szczęsny on a free transfer on Wednesday.

Karius, who made two appearances during his two-year spell at Newcastle, is not ruling out retirement.

“You have to be realistic. I had a few offers in the summer that didn’t appeal to me, which is why I made the decision to reject them and wait,” Karius explained.

“Therefore, it is currently an option that the career does not continue. However, I keep it open, train every day, keep myself fit and could theoretically start somewhere straight away. Everything is still possible.”
