On Wednesday, we covered claims from Spain which explained Chelsea lost Ghanaian youngster David Oduro to Barcelona in the summer window.
The 18-year-old joined the La Liga side from Ghanian side Accra Lions on deadline day. He has signed a three-year deal with the Catalan club. The left-back will be part of the Barcelona Atlètic squad and is in contention to make his debut for them this weekend.
SportyTV journalist Gary Al-Smith had a detailed chat with Oduro about his move to Barca and Chelsea’s interest.
The fullback has revealed that he travelled to England earlier this year, to have a trial with the Blues.
“I went to Chelsea. I don’t remember the date. It was in April. I trained with them for two weeks and then came back to Ghana. Then I prepared the visa process to travel to Spain. I stayed there for one week,” he said.
Al-Smith then informed the teenager that he was told that the Premier League side were ‘impressed’ with him.
Responding to that, Ouduro explained: “England is a very tough country to play football in. It’s very intense. So, when I went there, I was shaking. Coming from Africa, I had to do what I had to do, and the coaches liked me.”
The Ghana U20 international hasn’t categorically specified the reason he didn’t join the west London club.
Thursday’s edition of Sport have also relayed his comments and mention the English club. They state the teenager ‘passed a trial at Chelsea’ but decided to opt for Barcelona.
Ouduro’s aim is to make his way into the Spanish club’s first team. He can achieve it by regularly impressing for Barcelona Atlètic, which is their reserve team.
