Burnley have allowed Wout Weghorst to go out on loan since the start of the 2022/23 season.
The Netherlands international has a year left on his deal at Turf Moor, and the Clarets will have to sell the 31-year-old this summer in order to avoid losing him as a free agent in 2025.
FC Twente have been credited with interest in the striker, but they may find it difficult to take him away from Burnley, according to journalist Leon ten Voorde.
Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad’s podcast, relayed by Soccer News, Ten Voorde insists that the frontman could be out of the Eredivisie side’s reach.
Weghorst managed a goal and an assist at the Euro 2024, and it includes a winner against Poland.
“When he scored the goal against Poland, I texted Arnold Bruggink [Twente director] a bit rudely: ‘There he goes’,” he said.
“It would have been much better for Twente if he had had a bit of that Brian Brobbey role at the Euros. A bit anonymous, not played, in a corner of the dugout. Then the clubs will not be lining up for Wout Weghorst, but now that is a different story.
“You know how clubs look, they are opportunistic as hell. They think: ‘Hey, if he comes on the field, something will happen’. So, I think the Euros didn’t help FC Twente. With an anonymous Euros they could have picked him up for €3-4m, but that’s no longer possible.”
This should certainly please Burnley if they are looking to cash in on the Dutchman in this window. The Championship side and Weghorst will soon have to make a decision on his future.
