Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken has offered up his stance on the ongoing Dutch goalkeeper debate after an impressive display in the win over Greece.
The goalkeeper was speaking to Voetbal International after the Netherlands beat Greece last night, with the goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 win.
He was the chosen man between the sticks for manager Ronald Koeman, with debate over who should be the Netherlands number one raging on following the injury to Justin Bijlow.
The battle is currently between Flekken, who is the number one for Brentford after moving there this summer to replace David Raya, and Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.
Earlier this week Flekken insisted he was the obvious choice, with the Brighton man later hitting back and insisting he is good enough despite his age and doesn’t need an older goalkeeper to babysit him, which appears to be happening at club and international level.
“It was already clear during training that I was going to play,” the Brentford goalkeeper is quoted as saying.
“You have to train tactically, and I was at the base. Ultimately, it is nice when, after training, the national coach and the goalkeeper coach tell you that you are definitely playing.
“I hope I am the one who puts an end to the theme with the Dutch national team. That there is peace around the goalkeeper position.”
