Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Yerson Mosquera has told ESPN Equipo F that his decision to join FC Cincinnati on loan in the winter market has paid off.
The 22-year-old has gone through a difficult period since the Premier League side signed him from Atlético Nacional in 2021.
He picked up a hamstring injury while on pre-season with Wolves and then had to undergo surgery, which kept him out of action until January 2022.
The defender’s situation has improved at the MLS club and he’s been enjoying game time, which he couldn’t achieve at Molineux. That has also helped him receive a call up from Colombia manager Néstor Lorenzo for the friendlies against Iraq and Germany this month.
Mosquera has now opened up about his move to FC Cincinnati and the ‘problems’ he had at Wolves.
“At the beginning of the year I came to MLS to have continuity because in England I’ve not had enough opportunity due to various difficulties. Now I’m doing well, I competed often and I was able to show what I had saved for a long time,” he said.
“I tried to get the rhythm back but it was a little difficult for me. I had the chance to continue with the first team at that time, I felt prepared to give the team a hand but there were decisions that were made and I totally respect them.”
The Colombian hasn’t made an appearance for Wolves’ first team but was asked about the difficulties of playing in the Premier League.
“As everyone can see, the Premier League is too complete, very physical and where I learned to grow physically and tactically,” Mosquera explained.
“Going from the Colombian league to the Premier League is a big difference. The intensity there is incredible, I don’t take credit for our league but if you’re not well prepared in the Premier League, you’re in trouble.
“Yes, it was very difficult for me to adapt because you arrive at a club that has different tactics, where the players play 1-2 touches. It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s that the change in dynamics is a totally different thing.”
Despite going through a difficult period during his first 18 months at Wolves, the centre-back claims the time spent in England is helping him at FC Cincinnati.
