If Kevin Mbabu thought getting away from Fulham in January would help fix his season, it seems he was sorely mistaken.
The defender departed Craven Cottage midway through January in a loan deal to Servette after a frustrating first half of the season in which he’d barely featured under Marco Silva.
The hope was that he could rediscover his form and then head back to Fulham in the summer and look for a solution. It seems, though, the idea has worked out as planned, as Blick report today.
They explain that Mbabu’s season is ‘turning into a nightmare’ with the failed transfer to Fulham now being followed by misery at Servette.
However, he has been unable to do that, first conceding a penalty and being sent off against Lucerne last month in front of Switzerland coach Murat Yakin.
That mistakenly seemingly led to him being left out of the squad for the last international break and his misery has now continued as his missed penalty against FC Lugano in the Swiss Cup saw his side fall to defeat.
That miss ‘extended his nightmare season’ as his side missed out on a place in the final thanks to his failure to convert.
To his credit, the Fulham man joined his teammates in front of the fans to say thank you for their support, rather than escaping to the dressing room where he could have ‘drowned his sorrows’ in peace.
The fact is, though, he was the only player not to score in the shootout, after a game in which his ‘trials and tribulations’ at right-back were exposed for all to see and the penalty failure saw his side defeated.
Whether he can bounce back remains to be seen but at the moment things aren’t going well, to say the least.
