Earlier this season Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the missing man at Manchester United. Brought in from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window, the Armenian wasn’t immediately part of Jose Mourinho’s plans.

With Mourinho’s team stuttering on the pitch it was a mystery, Mkhitaryan had been the Bundesliga’s best player last season and could surely offer something to Manchester United.

Mourinho publicly questioned Mkhitaryan’s big game experience and whether he could yet cut it when the pressure was really on, and there were even suggestions that a quick exit could be on the cards.

That’s now all behind both the footballer and his manager, but speaking to German magazine SportBild, Mkhitaryan was asked about Mourinho’s public doubting of him.

Unless the 28 year fancies being banished again, he knows he needs to speak glowingly of his Manchester United manager, and skipped around the question, telling SportBild: “Yes, I believe that he has confidence in me, and therefore I will always give the best for him on the pitch. He is a special coach and expects special things from you – that you have to just know.”

That should be a big tick next to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s name in Jose Mourinho’s book.
