Signed from Burnley over the summer for £18.6m, Maxwel Cornet might have expected a bit more than 86 minutes of Premier League football after nine games.
He has played a fair bit in the Conference League qualifiers and the European competition itself, picking up five assists in four games, but his early days with the Hammers certainly won’t be going quite according to plan.
This has already led to talk of him potentially leaving in the near future, with VfL Wolfsburg a destination that could be attractive for both the welcoming club and the player.
Bild cover the story on Friday, reminding their readers this isn’t the first time Cornet has been associated with the Bundesliga side, with that already being the case in 2018, when he was at Lyon.
He came close to moving then, only for the Ligue 1 side to pull out at the last minute, with him eventually moving to Burnley in 2021.
When the Clarets were relegated, he then went to West Ham in the summer, where ‘things are not going well’ for the winger.
Regarding Wolfsburg wanting him, Bild state ‘the renewed interest would definitely fit, because VfL demonstrably lack the oomph on the wings’.
While Cornet is tied to West Ham until 2027 with an option for an extra year, the German outlet claim that ‘if his sporting situation and Moyes remain as unsatisfactory as they are at the moment’, the idea of a ‘loan in January’ could arise.
If that were to be the case, then ‘it would not be a surprise if VfL Wolfsburg became a competitor’.
