Newcastle United have been in the news over the past few weeks developments taking place both off and on the pitch.
The Magpies made headlines after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund completed the purchase of the Premier League side, which has, in turn, seen them get linked to both top quality players and title winning managers.
The immediate focus is on the latter since the Tyneside club parted ways with Steve Bruce earlier this week, just days after they suffered another league defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
Paulo Fonseca appears to be the favourite candidate to replace Bruce at St James’ Park, if a report from Corriere dello Sport is to be believed.
TuttoMercatoWeb, however, now state the former AS Roma manager is the not the only candidate lined up for the Newcastle job.
Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes manager Matías Almeyda has emerged as a surprise target and it’s said the English club have made an ‘enquiry’ for his availability.
The 47-year-old has so far managed River Plate, Club Atlético Banfield and Guadalajara before arriving in the MLS, but the website say Almeyda ‘would like to compete in a much more competitive league’.
The Premier League would offer that, but it seems like a long shot, with the bookies all pointing to Fonseca at this moment in time, and the Quakes manager likely just a backup option on their list.
