In the eight years Erik Lamela spent at Tottenham Hotspur, the Argentine winger was surrounded by criticism from those who said he couldn’t be regular enough.

That’s one of the reasons why he left Spurs for free this summer, agreeing to join Spanish side Sevilla on a three-year contract as part of the Bryan Gil deal.

Now Lamela has three goals in four games for the club, and it’s even more impressive once you learn he hasn’t even had the chance to start a match for them yet.

That’s why Estadio Deportivo today features a piece praising the former Tottenham winger’s start at the La Liga side, claiming he now already has the club and city ‘in his pocket’, becoming Julen Lopetegui’s secret weapon when games get a bit tight.

The outlet writes Lamela has shown ‘a spectacular display of technical resources, overflow, elegance in driving, a plastic stride … and, what is more important, an immediate adaptation, which is what clubs usually value the most’.

Lamela’s three goals were scored in La Liga, and even though he only had a few minutes in the Champions League clash against RB Salzburg, he still won a Man of the Match poll with 73% of votes.

Following such a great start, there are now much bigger expectations for Lamela’s season at Sevilla, despite the scenario how he left Tottenham and his rather disappointing years in a Spurs shirt.
