Arsenal have long maintained an interest in signing Christopher Nkunku, even going back to his time at Paris Saint-Germain.
The midfielder left PSG for RB Leipzig in 2019. The Gunners continued to follow him, after he made a switch to the Bundesliga.
Earlier this year, various reports from the German media reported Mikel Arteta’s side want the 23-year-old, but it was made clear Arsenal would struggle to secure a deal without European football.
The north London side or any other club failed to take Nkunku away from Leipzig in the summer.
Leipzig suffered a 6-3 defeat against Manchester City in the first Champions League group stage fixture. Despite the defeat, the Arsenal target starred for his side by scoring a hat-trick.
Bild believe Nkunku was the best player on the pitch in Wednesday’s clash at the Etihad, giving him the highest rating.
Nkunku is the only player to receive a rating of 1 which, per German rating system, is ‘very good’, while City trio of Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were rated 2.
Taking the past record into account, we won’t be surprised if a new report emerges about Arsenal interest in Nkunku in the coming days. It would be thought that European football would again be a condition of a move, so Arteta needs to do some serious work to get Arsenal into that situation.
