The newspaper also provides a background on why the left-back rejected a contract offer from the La Liga winners to accept United’s attractive proposal in the last window.
Fernández had to battle it out with Miguel Gutiérrez for the left-back position at Real Madrid’s youth team. This has been told by those closely associated with La Fábrica to AS.
“Álvaro is a footballer with a great future who has been hurt by having Miguel Gutiérrez ahead of him [at Real Madrid]. But conditions for him to do well in England, he has them…” the unnamed source was quoted as saying.
The youngster joined the Red Devils academy and was initially part of their U18 side. He was then given opportunities to represent the U23s, where he has featured twice in the Premier League 2 for United.
AS suggests the Premier League side’s idea is for the teenager to train as regularly as possible with the first team.
Should he continue to impress with his performances for United’s U18 and U23 sides, the report states he could be ‘step away’ from being included in the first team by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
