Over the past few months, it appears that Lazio could be the ones to sign Luis Suárez from Watford FC to bolster their attack this summer.
The Italians had targeted the Colombian to help out Ciro Immobile and Felipe Caicedo in their Champions League campaign next season, and an agreement was reportedly reached with the player.
All that was left was to convince Watford, which was easier said than done since they wanted a relatively hefty price (around €15m) for a player who had never played in a top European league, and articles in Italy dropped off somewhat.
They still reappear occasionally to let us know Lazio haven’t forgotten about him, but it’s certainly not as prominent as it once was.
With Watford now relegated back down to the Championship, things could change and prices could drop, which is perhaps why Rennes in France are now taking an interest.
However, he’s not top of their list, as L’Equipe point out that while the Ligue 1 side are following both Darwin Nuñez and Luis Suárez in La Liga2, ‘the avenue leading to Almería’s Uruguayan seems more likely than that leading to the Hispano-Colombian currently at Zaragoza’.
Furthermore, there’s still some waiting that needs to be done, as both players are in the playoffs for promotion back to La Liga, meaning they can’t fully focus on their future yet.
It will be interesting to see what Watford’s plans are now going forward, but if the previous reports from the Italian media are anything to go by, we doubt Suárez will have much interest sticking around in the Championship.
