This is a story which may not be getting a lot of attention, but one of the many Watford loanees is having quite a memorable time in Spain.

Back in the summer of 2018, the Hornets loaned Matheus Aias to Mirandés. The club were in the third division at the time, and there was obviously not a lot of expectation around the move.

However, first they clinched the promotion to the second division. And this season, they’ve qualified for the Copa del Rey semifinals after eliminating the likes of Celta de Vigo, Sevilla and Villarreal.

Aias has been interviewed by Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte on Thursday, and spoke a little about the great time he’s having at the club.

“Seven months ago, we were in the playoffs to move up to the second division. Even so, the main goal this season was not to be relegated,” Matheus Aias told Globo Esporte.

“To be honest, we didn’t expect that. But when we passed through Sevilla, we saw that we could make history, and that’s what I’m focusing on now.”

Aias is a striker who has seven goals in 21 appearances this season so far. And when asked about who his inspiration is, he chose a Brazilian legend to talk about.

“My idol is Romario. Due to my age, I even followed Ronaldo’s career more, but I always watch Romario’s videos. As a striker, I think he was the best finisher, especially in the box.”

The Brazilian should be returning to Watford at the end of the season. Signed by the club in 2017, he’s never made an appearance for the Hornets.

Mirandés face Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.
