After a week of a few outlets suggesting that Tottenham would be a great matchup for the likes of Inter, it’s actually Milan who will face Spurs in the Champions League first knockout round.
The draw for the next phase of the competition took place on Monday morning, and set up some great games, including one involving Antonio Conte’s and Stefano Pioli’s teams.
What comes of this, we will have to wait more than 100 days to find out, seeing as there is a World Cup to play beforehand, but that hasn’t stopped club legend Franco Baresi from quickly commenting on Milan drawing Tottenham.
Immediately after Spurs were pitted against the Serie A side, Sport Mediaset had a chat with Italian club’s honorary vice president.
He said: “There were more famous teams, but they should not be underestimated. They have a great manager in Conte, whom we know well, but we are ready and mature, and are in a position to play two great games.
“We respect Tottenham, Conte knows our football, it will be difficult like in any Champions League match, but we have to think big and ambitious. Last year’s experience helped us a lot, we can meet the height of this round. The players have grown a lot, in every department.”
Tottenham now have two games to play before the World Cup, as they first face Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before welcoming Leeds in London next Saturday.
