Last season, Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber was on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach and made 27 appearances in all competitions.
The Bundesliga side wanted to retain him had held talks with the Whites, which was revealed by their director Roland Virkus.
Virkus stated in July that Gladbach couldn’t meet Leeds United’s demands, and the Whites refused to sanction another loan move.
Today’s edition of Rheinische Post says Gladbach had the ‘right feeling’ to walk away from a deal for the 26-year-old.
The German club didn’t have funds to buy the Leeds man. Despite Virkus’ earlier quotes, the newspaper claims there weren’t enough sporting arguments to bet on him.
They state: ‘Even as a loan candidate, the Austrian was no longer a hot stock; instead, there was no left-footed player for the defence.
‘The bottom line is that Wöber’s interlude in Gladbach was not a convincing one in an overall messed up season that almost ended in relegation. Wöber defended too wildly, too unreliably, and was also set back by injuries.’
Since returning to Elland Road, the defender has made five appearances for the Championship side.
The Austria international was sidelined for 45 days in September and October due to a knee injury. After regaining full fitness, he made four league appearances and again lost his place in the side.
Recent claims have mentioned Red Bull Salzburg are interested in bringing the defender back to the club in January, but this was dismissed by their director, Rouven Schröder.
Gladbach feel they made the right decision by not buying Wöber in the summer.
