Long seen as one of the more talented centre-backs to come through the French league in recent years, it was perhaps a bit surprising to see West Ham land Issa Diop when they did.
Other clubs were also circling, but the French defender decided to prioritise a move where he knew he would start most games, allowing him to adapt to the Premier League without having the pressure that comes with a move to some of the bigger sides in the league.
While things haven’t gone entirely smoothly at London Stadium, as West Ham currently find themselves in the middle of a relegation battle, Diop isn’t thinking about moving just yet.
Speaking to Europe 1 about the rumours surrounding his future, he said: “Honestly, I don’t really pay attention to it. I try and be the best footballer I can be. Beyond that, you know the media. It’s part of football. I’m just trying have the best season I can.”
At 23 years of age and now in his second season with the Hammers, many see this as the perfect time to try something else, move up in the world of football and perhaps even give Didier Deschamps something to think about when it comes to picking his future France squad.
However, Diop doesn’t think being with the London side is particularly hindering him.
He continued: “It didn’t stop Payet to be in the France team when he was at West Ham. The France national team, it’s a dream. It’s the top, top level, so you need to be very good at club level.”
It seems Diop is really enjoying himself with the Hammers, which will be music to the ears of the London Stadium faithful ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
