West Ham United saw an approach for Atletico Madrid defender Çağlar Söyüncü rejected this month, as he eyes a return to Turkey instead.
That’s according to Sabah, who say West Ham were one of several sides to compete with Fenerbahce for the former Leicester City man but ultimately come away disappointed.
The newspaper explains that Fenerbahce are expecting to add Çağlar Söyüncü to their additions this month after also bringing in Leonardo Bonucci.
The Turkish side have been pursuing him for two months, with the player keen on the move to secure regular playing time and ensure he is in Turkey’s squad for Euro 2024.
Fenerbahce’s efforts convinced him, with the club sending representatives to Spain for a week, during which they set up camp and held constant meetings with the defender to talk him into the switch.
He’s received guarantees he’ll get regular playing time and so rejected offers from elsewhere, with West Ham one of several sides to have approached him before being sent packing.
The deal now simply needs to be wrapped up before the end of the transfer window but there is confidence it will be, with Fenerbahce seemingly have successfully beaten away competition from the Premier League for the defender.
