Four days ago, L’Equipe reported Watford are trying to buy Alexandre Mendy this summer and have made a €1m offer to SM Caen.

The striker was desperate to join Sunderland a year ago, but the French club refused to let him leave.

Caen have been relegated to the third division and Mendy seems determined to leave this summer. Watford’s interest is backed up by Foot Mercato journalist Josué Cassé.

He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, Montpellier, who have been relegated to the second division in France, being interested.

The Guinea-Bissau international has less than a year left on his contract and Montpellier’s project appeals to him. The journalist adds the Ligue 2 club are in talks with Caen to find an agreement, without providing any further details.

Last week, L’Equipe reported Paulo Pezzolano’s side have made a €1m bid to Caen, but Cassé now claims otherwise. He states Watford have only held talks with the frontman’s entourage, without sending an offer to the French club.

Montpellier seem to be stepping up to try and sign the player. Therefore, Watford must act quickly if they want to beat the Ligue 2 club to win the race for Mendy’s signature.
