Unable to find game time under Antonio Conte at Tottenham, Harry Winks decided it was time to finally leave the nest and spread his wings elsewhere.
While many would have expected him to stay in England, the 26-year-old surprised everyone by agreeing to go to Sampdoria in Italy for the season.
The Serie A side even have an option to buy the Tottenham midfielder should they so wish, and whether they do will likely depend on how he plays.
He has yet to do so for Sampdoria due to an injury, but many, including the club’s president, are eager to see what he can bring to Italian football.
Speaking at a charity event, and relayed by Club Doria 46, Marco Lanna said: “Winks resumes training this week and rejoins the group next week, so I’m told. For us, he can be very important. He’s a player who wants to play. He’s not afraid of pain. I’m confident that he will take the field as soon as he can. He wants to prove that Tottenham made a mistake. You will see it when he’s on the pitch.”
We’ll have to see about that, since Conte seems very pleased with his current options, having brought in Yves Bissouma in the summer and signed Rodrigo Bentancur last January, complementing the likes of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at the heart of his team.
As for Winks, he will now strive to adapt to Serie A’s game, having previously only known Tottenham throughout his career, playing 203 times for them, scoring five goals and assisting another six.
