Despite playing a bit part role at Tottenham these days, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was still called up by Kasper Hjulmand for the Denmark squad.
There has been a few question marks around the decision, but it appears that, as things stand, the midfielder’s spot in the national team is more than safe.
That’s according to Hjulmand himself, who was asked about the Tottenham player’s situation and whether it could affect his decisions going forward, relayed by Bold.
He said: “I’m not that nervous about him right now. I hope he will play a lot before the Euros even though Tottenham are only in the Premier League and therefore doesn’t have that many other matches.”
What is working in Højbjerg’s favour at this moment in time isn’t his footballing ability, but his personality, as that is the hardest thing for Hjulmand to find.
He elaborated: “If anyone thinks you can remove Pierre and replace him with someone else, it’s not true. He has been everything to us for the last three years. He is a volcano in the national team and has so much influence on our team.
“He is dominant with his physical strength and delivered a crucial goal against Finland. He has a passion that drives the team with ferocity. There is no doubt at all that Pierre has a huge impact on our entire team.”
The 28-year-old may have made 30 appearances in all competitions under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham this season, but only eight of those have been starts.
He has been unable to provide a goal or an assist for his team to date this campaign, but that won’t stop Hjulmand from taking him to the Euros, injuries permitting.
The manager added: “I find it hard to imagine replacing him for the Euros because he has such a huge impact and importance to our game. Of course, there is always a limit, but as the situation is right now, I trust Pierre 100%.”
