Arriving from RSC Anderlecht in 2019 in a £12.5m transfer, Leander Dendoncker took a while to get going at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The now 26-year-old has been used in a smorgasbord of positions at Molineux over the year, ranging from centre-back to more advanced roles in midfield, which, while useful in a team needing versatility, has been a problem for the Belgium international himself.
He said as much in an interview with PlaySports at the weekend, relayed by Walfoot: “A new manager means a new philosophy. When Nuno Espírito Santo arrived, I also sat the first few games on the bench before scrounging game time bit by bit.
“My versatility doesn’t help me, I don’t think. I’m somehow put in midfield, sometimes in defence, which makes it difficult to continuously produce good performances. My favourite role is in midfield.”
Dendoncker got himself in the headlines over the weekend by scoring the second of his team’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, reacting the fastest and poking home a rebound in the 18th minute.
That was his 11th goal for Wolves over the years, for whom he has played 143 games and also picked up three assists along the way.
The win against Spurs mean Bruno Lage’s team now sit seventh in the Premier League after 23 games, four points behind West Ham with two games in hand.
