Liverpool went out of the Champions League on Wednesday evening as they lost 3-2 to Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were the better team during the initial 90 minutes but failed to convert that superiority into a win. Atletico are the European masters of disciplined play, yet they also managed to score four goals over the two matches, and Diego Simeone will be thrilled with what he got from his team.

Loving the underdog label, to ‘suffer’ is taken as a pride for Atleti and something which helps connect the fans with their team. Once again, they’ve succeeded, and that leaves Liverpool with just one competition left.

Winning the Premier League was the goal for the season, and that alone would have been taken before a ball was kicked in this campaign, however, there will be disappointment that things unravelled elsewhere recently.

The Spanish sport media today celebrates Atletico, and isn’t too kind to Adrian.

Despite speaking to the Spanish media repeatedly during his career, that hasn’t protected the goalkeeper from scrutiny.

Both Marca and AS don’t even give him a grade for the match. The only other player to suffer the same was Diego Costa.

Marca say Adrian ‘didn’t measure up’ and the contrast between him and Jan Oblak was huge. They were also unimpressed with Joe Gomez, James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi and Sadio Mane.

AS largely agree, although they also put Virgil van Dijk among the worst performers.
