Tottenham have had a difficult season, especially in the Premier League, and Guglielmo Vicario has been a regular presence between the sticks to watch it unfold in front of him.
The Italian and Spurs will have a shot at redeeming themselves in the Europa League final and it will be Vicario’s biggest chance yet of winning a major trophy.
The Tottenham star has now spoken to Gazzetta dello Sport about the upcoming clash, and he spoke about an urge to create history with the London club.
“We did badly in the league and we were incredible in the cup.
“You want to be at your best at all times, but we know that our performances in the Premier League were not good enough and we are very disappointed with how things went. Now we want to make history for this club.”
When asked about what playing in a Europa League final means to him, Vicario stated:
“A lot because I wouldn’t have thought, two years ago when I signed for this club, that in 24 months I could have the chance to play in a final.
“This is also the beauty of life, of football, they are a bit like the dreams you try to build as a child when you start playing this sport. The importance is undeniable. Obviously there will only be one winner: we want to be the winner as they want to be, it will be a question of details, of malice, of many factors that will affect the final result.”
The goalkeeper also spoke of how Tottenham can use the final as a way to turn around a difficult season.
He claimed: “Yes, thinking that what we did in the cup cannot be diminished, that we have the chance to play in a final and I don’t know how many times that happens in a career.”
“It’s a great opportunity, for us players but also for everyone who is part of this club and for the fans.
“We want this trophy because it would mean making history for this club, ending up in the photos that are inside the stadium, seeing ourselves again next year as we walk down the corridor that leads to the locker rooms while we lift the cup: we want to try to do that.”
Tottenham will definitely look to Vicario for inspiration in the final, considering how much the Italy international has grown in stature at the London club. Even in a difficult season where he has also faced injury problems, he has shown glimpses of his ability for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The goalkeeper was asked if he had a message for a his teammates, and said: “We have to know that the team that has the right mentality and makes the least mistakes will be the one that lifts the trophy. And we have to stay focused for 90-120 minutes, for as long as it takes to win.”
