Following Tottenham’s hijacking of the Arnaut Danjuma deal, it appears that the Nicolo Zaniolo stories have died down for now.
While they are still rife because of the interest of Milan, the mentions of Spurs have dwindled as Fabio Paratici is busy elsewhere.
That being said, it doesn’t mean that Tottenham are gone entirely, as Gazzetta dello Sport believe they are still in the mix, and that despite their first offer for the Italian being deemed insufficient by the Serie A club.
That’s because they wanted the option to buy in the loan to only be mandatory if they qualify for the Champions League, but with Roma wanting the money guaranteed regardless of where Antonio Conte’s side end up, it wasn’t accepted.
Newcastle rocked up, but their offer was also turned away, meaning that we are now left with a ‘two-horse race’ to sign the player.
With Milan offering too little and Paratici refusing to budge on Tottenham’s offer, there’s also the possibility that Zaniolo stays until the summer, at which point his price will drop some more, since his contract in Rome expires in 2024.
Since that won’t be renewed, the club will be forced to sell, and depending on whether the Danjuma deal works out, could return for Zaniolo.
It’s not over yet, but it does appear to be fizzling out.
