On Sunday, Portuguese newspaper Record featured a cover and a five-page interview with Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes, who claims to be very excited and focused about his future with the Lions.
When reading about the Brazilian, it’s easy to recall the many transfer rumours which surrounded him in the last transfer window, as the likes of Everton and Newcastle United were linked to him.
The Toffees’ interest in the midfielder had been said to be quite strong, as many times it was claimed they were close to reaching an agreement for his transfer, and it was believed he could be on his way to the Goodison Park for around €20m.
So the chase from the Premier League side was one of the subjects in Record’s interview with Nunes at the weekend. And it turns out that even the player recalls that Everton’s pursuit was real and then suddenly disappeared.
“To be honest the only thing that came to me was Everton’s interest but nothing happened as I was on vacation, and my agent knows I don’t want to have that kind of distraction while I’m relaxed and recovering,” Nunes told Record.
“There was talk of Everton, but in the meantime I came back and nothing else happened.”
On the possibilities of Jorge Mendes ‘opening doors’ for him in other leagues, Nunes said: “I don’t believe this will open more doors for me because they also know that my desire is to stay at Sporting as long as possible. I want to achieve many more things and win every game to keep learning and growing. My focus is to improve and I don’t think about anything else. That day of thinking about another league may come – or not”.
Even though Matheus Nunes continues doing well for Sporting this season, there haven’t been many rumours about his future lately. Still, scouts from Everton and Newcastle reportedly continue to watch the Lions, so they’re aware of his progress at the club.
