The critical focus on Tottenham Hotspur at this moment in time is on their purchases, Rafael van der Vaart has added his name to the unimpressed.
He’s more than aware of the issues that have arisen after a big summer spend on talents such as Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio and Omar Marmoush.
Rafael van der Vaart thinks Tottenham should be getting more what they’ve invested. However, he also believes it’s the sign of wider market issues.
“They’ve certainly messed up the market a bit, so to speak,” he said to Rondo podcast.
“Players we don’t even know get sold there, and you’re already looking at a price tag of 40 or 50 million. That leaves clubs like Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord thinking: ‘What are *we* supposed to do?’ The pool of players available to us is obviously a different story.”
Can’t bare to watch Tottenham
The midfielder isn’t ignoring the glaring issues, though. He’s been watching Tottenham at the beginning of this season like everyone else. Some believe Roberto de Zerbi needs a complete rethink.
That means he’s also been watching as they’ve gone four games without a win and without scoring a goal. It is the first time that they have gone goalless through their first four games of a league season.
It is not, though, their worst start to a season yet. That honour remains with Juande Ramos’ team from 2008. That year saw them pick up just two points from eight games. He was eventually sacked and replaced by Harry Redknapp, who led the club to eighth.
That’s little comfort for the Dutchman. He admits he can’t even bring himself to watching his former club at the minute.
“I can’t even bear to watch them anymore,” he said.
“I find Tottenham truly awful to watch,” the former international laments. “When you spend *that* much money on those players… I find it truly incredible. Truly incredible.”
