Villarreal defender Pau Torres has detailed the conversation he had with his agent when Tottenham pursued him in the summer.
The defender was the subject of interest from Spurs throughout the summer window, with them keen to add to their backline.
They eventually settled on Cristian Romero, signing the Argentine defender in a big-money move from Atalanta.
That was after they had been rejected by Torres, who turned down the chance to join the club as he wanted to play in the Champions League with his hometown club.
His decision to reject Tottenham has been something he’s spoken about on several occasions, making it clear he didn’t really have to think twice about doing so.
Now he’s detailed the conversation he held with his agent when the Tottenham bid was presented to him on TV show La Resistencia, relayed by El Desmarque.
“More than what I earn now”, the defender responded, adding, “as I play for my hometown team, which few players do…. We play in the Champions League. That was my dream this year, so I decided to stay where I am happy.”
The latest comments from Torres are unlikely to come as a shock to Tottenham fans, given what he’s said previously about their interest.
His refusal to name a specific wage is interesting because it only really benefits Tottenham that he keep it quiet.
The inclination is certainly that Spurs were willing to offer him a big sum to make the move in the summer, but that alone wasn’t enough to convince him to leave.
That’s a credit to Torres, although it remains to be seen if his stance will be the same should Spurs or anyone else come calling with similar offers this summer.
