When Lisandro Martinez joined Manchester United in a €57m move from Ajax last summer, it soon became clear that the squad had been lacking a bit of his mentality.
The Argentine defender soon stood out, proving why Erik ten Hag worked to bring him from the Dutch side, and is now a pillar of their defensive system.
Martinez has been interviewed by Argentina’s Televison Publica. In quotes brought by El Once, he talks a lot about how he works on his mentality.
The Manchester United player was answering questions about the World Cup win, and when asked about the situations of pressure that footballers are put in, he explained how important it is to get professional assistance.
“I work with my psychologist, which is how I try to disconnect everything. Having a psychologist, doing therapy is essential. What you show on the pitch is what, more or less, you are in your personal life.”
Martinez also explained that he manages to preview all potential situations prior to games.
“I visualise before and during matches.”
In his first season for Manchester United, Martinez made 45 appearances, even with a metatarsal injury forcing him to be sidelined for the final weeks of the league. Now he seems to be physically, and especially mentally, ready for another year under Erik ten Hag.
