Manchester United moving for Wout Weghorst is a “dangerous move” by Erik Ten Hag, who risks adding another “narcissist” to his squad.
That’s according to Pierre van Hooijdonk and Hugo Borst, who fear the move could backfire if Manchester United pull it off.
United are believed to be on the hunt for a striker in this window, with the current squad lacking an out and out centre-forward after Ronaldo was released from his contract.
Weghorst has emerged as the as the surprise candidate to fill the position over the last few days, with Ten Hag seemingly keen to bring him back to England.
The striker is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley, having spent an unsuccessful spell with the Clarets at the end of last season after arriving in the January transfer window.
That brief and disappointing period at Turf Moor means doubts remain about him and Van Hooijdonk has warned Manchester United the move could be a risky one.
“I think it’s quite a dangerous move by Ten Hag,” Voetbal Zone report him saying.
“A Dutchman, who also played in England with Burnley and didn’t play like a rockstar there. That does leave a mark on your forehead. I don’t see him as a battering ram, a point of contact through the air.
“That they are going to say: we are going to play everything diagonally through the air for Wout, I do not believe in that.”
The bigger issue for journalist Hugo Borst is the player’s personality, which he believes could end up disrupting the new atmosphere Ten Hag has built at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman has worked hard since the summer on reuniting a fractured squad and removing undesirable personalities from it as a result.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the obvious example of that, with his behaviour and attitude leading Ten Hag and Manchester United to cancel his contract in November.
According to him, relayed by Soccer News, it would be going from “one narcissist to another” if United were to swap Ronaldo for Weghorst this month.
Why that is the case isn’t made clear but it’s clear that Weghorst is a player with a big personality, as he showed during his now infamous clash with Lionel Messi at the World Cup.
Either way, the sentiment in the Netherlands appears to be that Manchester United might want to think twice about this possible transfer.
