Pontus Jansson’s contract at Brentford expires in June and the Premier League side have already confirmed that he will return to Malmö FF in the summer.
The defender joined the Bees in 2019 and was part of their squad that achieved promotion to the top flight in 2021. Thomas Frank hasn’t relied upon the 32-year-old heavily this season and he’s been restricted to 12 league appearances.
Jansson’s decision to leave Brentford for Malmö after this season will present difficult choices for the club, according to Expressen.
That’s because the centre-back position is already well covered at the Swedish side as they currently have five players in the same position. Niklas Moisander and Lasse Nielsen have deals expiring at the end of this year.
Nielsen and Derek Cornelius are the first-choice for Malmö manager Henrik Rydström and one of them will have to make way for the current Brentford player The former has given his take on the club’s decision to agree a deal with Jansson.
“It is a no-brainer if you can bring home a Premier League captain,” he said, as quoted by Expressen.
With a contract expiring in December, Nielsen hasn’t opened talks with Malmö over a new deal. It could be him who could make way for Jansson at the club, and the 35-year-old is aware it won’t be easy to get regular minutes.
“It’s tough competition but this is my seventh season here and it’s always been that way. It might be difficult to keep everyone happy, but I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a club where everyone was happy,” Nielsen explained.
“When you don’t play, you shouldn’t be satisfied. The group feels good and everyone helps each other, regardless of whether you are on the bench or in the starting eleven. I think the harmony is good.”
