Over the course of the past few days, Southampton have really increased their attempts to sign a striker to help Nathan Jones out.

They have looked around the market, and one of the attractive opportunities was Moussa Dembélé, currently at Lyon.

That’s because the Frenchman only has six months left on his contract, meaning he would be available for a reduced fee, which is always attractive for a club like Southampton.

It was said previously that the Saints were flirting with the player, clearly trying to convince him to swap France for St Mary’s, but their efforts were in vain.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who explain the striker ‘turned down an approach on Monday’ from Southampton, and ‘will finish the season’ at his current club.

Basically, at this point, ‘barring an unlikely U-turn’, any team wanting to sign him will have to do so on a free transfer in the summer.

Whether Southampton are still interested at that point, however, remains to be seen.

Dembélé has so far scored two goals and picked up one assist in 16 games for Lyon this season.
