Unai Emery’s decision to reject Newcastle United and stay at Villarreal was a surprise that few saw coming.

That’s according to SuperSport journalist Rafa Marin, who covers the situation today after the wild events of this week.

Emery appeared to be one step away from replacing Steve Bruce at St James Park this week, with numerous English reports briefing that a deal was basically done.

That all came as something of a shock to Emery and Villarreal, though, who had no idea about any such negotiations or impending move.

By Wednesday, the reported move was dead in the water, with Emery electing to stay in Spain and reject Newcastle.

That’s obviously led to a fair amount of reaction, and Marin now shares his opinion, stating ‘there is still room for surprises’.

He says that Emery’s decision to stay was one of the ‘unexpected ones’ and the ‘latest and greatest’ example that there are still surprises to be had in football.

His departure would have been the news of the week, but now his continuity has taken that tag instead, given that there is ‘virtually nothing impossible’ for club states like Newcastle.

Emery was reportedly ‘flattered’ by the proposal, but there were ‘things that didn’t add up’, so he decided to reject the move and stay where he was. As Marin puts it, there was ‘water in the pool but not enough’.

Despite that, it was still a surprise for him to let the Newcastle train pass but what it did do was give everyone hope that ‘not everything is money’.
