Mateus Fernandes has been one positive in a frustrating season for Southampton.

The 20-year-old has played 31 times in the Premier League, racking up a tally of two goals and three assists.

He also scored one goal in the League Cup, showing his quality multiple times in the campaign.

It now seems as if Southampton could lose the Portuguese youngster in the summer, with the midfielder clearly having showcased a desire to leave in an interview with DAZN.

He said, as relayed by A Bola: “At the beginning of the season I felt that I would not have a place in the team and the club also had to make choices. Even so, I was happy, because I was able to provide a financial return and help Sporting.”

Making his desire clear about his future, Fernandes said: “I want to return to Sporting.”

This is a situation Southampton need to address, and sell quickly if that is to be the outcome.

Fernandes has shown he possesses quality, but if he wants to depart, the Saints can do little about it apart from earning a profit from his sale.

With the season approaching an end, they should now consider replacements for Fernandes, who likely feels he’s too good for the Championship.
