Earlier this week, it was reported that Juventus managing director Francesco Calvo is set to join Aston Villa.

There was confidence that the Italian will take over as the CEO of the Birmingham club, although the reasons for his departure from the Old Lady were not known.

Calvo has a history of having worked closely with Aston Villa sporting director Monchi, but now Italian football-business expert Simone Brancozzi has expressed surprise about his decision to join Aston Villa.

He told Radio Bianconeri, as relayed by TuttoJuve: “Calvo leaving Juventus is him experiencing a downgrade in my opinion. No one would leave Juve to go to Aston Villa.”

Brancozzi believes that something is wrong at Juventus and this is leading to Calvo moving to Aston Villa and leaving the Turin giants.

“And if they do, there’s probably something going on. The owners are realising that there’s a need for more quality and also more Juventus-ness in the club. It seems to me that at the moment there’s an air of demobilisation at the top levels.”

There has been criticism regarding how Juventus have been operating when it comes to their upper management and this reached a peak when they sacked Thiago Motta.

Calvo has an impressive CV which has seen him work at Barcelona and AS Roma and in that sense, it is Juve’s loss and Aston Villa’s gain.

Considering how Monchi knows how the Italian works, it could prove to be a key appointment. Even though their combination didn’t yield too many positive results at Roma, this can be their chance at a better collaboration.
