Now awarded by FIFA’s The Best as the best goalkeeper of 2022, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is more hyped up than ever.

That made Sport Italia contact the player’s agent and make a few questions about the player’s current success.

Gustavo Goni claimed things changed a lot for Martinez since the World Cup title, with the Aston Villa goalkeeper becoming a loved figure in his country.

“Everyday life has changed enormously for him. In his country he is now a revered person and has… redefined the role of goalkeeper,” Gustavo Goni told Sport Italia.

“Because all the children in Argentina today want to be a goalkeeper when they grow up (laughs, ed), it’s not something that happens in many countries. Besides of course the fact that everyone would like to be Messi, of course!”

Sport Italia then started making questions about his situation at Aston Villa, starting with Martinez’s relationship with manager Unai Emery.

“The relationship with Emery couldn’t be better. In fact, public statements are one thing, personal statements and the daily report are another. Emery has expressed his desire to keep him in the team, Emiliano is at the centre of the project for a team that aims to participate in the next cups. He’s a leader of the group.”

Then they asked the agent if he sees the player in the Serie A in case some Italian club make a move to sign the goalkeeper in the summer window.

“Let’s see what happens in the summer. Today there are few teams in the world suited to his level, I don’t see more than a dozen. Among them there are also some Italian teams, but obviously it will be necessary to see if they show interest and above all if they find a possible agreement with Aston Villa. Where today he is fine”.

Quizzed about Martinez’s ‘next goals’, Goni went for a major achievement, but did not use that to tease with a move out of his club.

“He would like to play and win the Champions League, let’s hope he can do it with Aston Villa”.

Martinez has a contract with Atson Villa running until 2027, and is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €28m. He was even linked to Juventus about an year ago, but his move to Italy isn’t really a thing in the rumour mill.
