Udinese’s Gerard Deulofeu was on the agenda of a handful of clubs in the winter market and Aston Villa were included in this list.
The Premier League side’s interest in the forward was also confirmed by his agent earlier this month.
Three days ago, Gazzetta dello Sport stated Aston Villa have already made a rich offer to the 28-year-old and are ready to propose a €20m bid to the Serie A club.
A day later, Udinese confirmed the player suffered an injury and will consult a specialist to know the extent of the damage.
This didn’t put off Unai Emery’s side as Gazzetta said yesterday they are still interested in the Spaniard. He is also keen on joining the Villans.
Aston Villa’s hope of signing Deulofeu in the January window has suffered a massive blow after Udinese confirmed he will have to undergo a surgery.
“Udinese Calcio announces that, following the specialist consultation carried out, Gerard Deulofeu will have to undergo capsular reinforcement surgery on his right knee in order to increase its stability,” a statement read.
Udinese Calcio comunica che, all’esito del consulto specialistico effettuato, Gerard #Deulofeu dovrà sottoporsi ad un intervento di rinforzo capsulare al ginocchio destro al fine di incrementarne la stabilità.

Calciomercato.it have relayed it and further add the player’s ‘season is already over’, which will rule out any transfer in the January window.
