Saudi Pro League CEO Omar Mugharbel has been asked about Newcastle United during a chat with Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

In October 2021, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund took over the Magpies from Mike Ashley and appointed Eddie Howe as their manager a month later.

The Newcastle owners have also invested in golf and tennis, while they have stakes at multiple clubs in Saudi and the list includes Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Ettifaq and Al-Qadisiyah.

On Sunday, Real Madrid will take on Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final in Saudi Arabia and this has given the Spanish media chance to conduct interviews with officials and some players of the Saudi clubs.

El Mundo caught up with Omar Mugharbel to review the Saudi Pro League’s growth since Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Al-Nassr in January 2023. Several big-name players from Europe have followed the Portuguese star to the Middle East.

After discussing the Saudi Pro League’s plans for the future, El Mundo pointed out to Omar Mugharbel that the Newcastle owners have increased investment in Saudi and reduced it abroad… such as with the Magpies.

In reply, he said: “That is another department, it is not the responsibility of the league, but what I can say is that in the league there is no shortage of investment, and it is going to stay that way for the 2034 World Cup. It is about building an industry and accelerating its growth within our country.”
