Eliezer Mayenda arrived at Sunderland from Sochaux in July 2023 and had to wait until the start of this season to enjoy regular minutes.
The Black Cats appointed Régis Le Bris as manager last summer and that improved the striker’s situation with the Black Cats. He failed to score a goal or register an assist before Le Bris’ arrival and has nine goals and five assists this season.
L’Equipe got in touch with the 20-year-old’s father, Fulgence Mayenda, who has explained how the Sunderland manager played a key role in his son’s development.
“Régis has established a real bond of trust with him and has helped him progress a lot, particularly in his defensive work and versatility. They both speak French, which makes communication easier,” he said.
Since the Frenchman took over at the Championship club, he’s let his compatriots, Pierre Ekwah, Timothée Pembélé, Adil Aouchiche and Abdoullah Ba move elsewhere. A source within Sunderland’s dressing room explained what’s important for the manager.
‘Some of them resented not getting more playing time. Régis doesn’t care about nationalities; he’s more interested in the ability to fit into a team environment,’ a source said.
Sunderland are in the running to secure promotion to the Premier League as they made it to the Championship playoffs.
They sealed a 2-1 win over Coventry City and the return leg will take place at the Stadium of Light later today. If Sunderland overcome Frank Lampard’s side, they will face Sheffield United in the playoff final.
L’Equipe state Mayenda and Wilson Isidor ‘wouldn’t see their future elsewhere’ if the Black Cats were to return to the top flight. In short, the duo can continue if Sunderland secure the promotion.
