It’s no secret Tottenham Hotspur had been looking for more attacking options last summer. After being linked to many names in the transfer market, they ended up only signing Carlos Vinícius from Benfica.

Now a report from Italy claims that Spurs actually had advanced talks for another player. That was Cagliari’s João Pedro.

Outlet Grand Hotel CalcioMercato writes that between May and June, there were ‘real contacts’ between his agent Marco Piccioli and Tottenham’s sports director.

The website claims that manager José Mourinho liked the striker a lot and approved the signing. However, there were ‘a few more steps’ for the negotiation to succeed, and that never happened.

Later on that summer, Torino tried to take the Brazilian from Cagliari, and his club demanded €25m for the transfer. We can only imagine that they had been asking something similar in the talks with Spurs.

João Pedro is having another positive season for Cagliari, captaining his side with 15 goals scored so far. As he turns 30 next year, it sounds like that was one of the few chances he’d have to move to a Premier League side.
