Leeds United were linked with Rodrigo De Paul throughout the summer transfer window, and claims surrounding the Udinese star have continued through to the winter market.

Marcelo Bielsa’s club get a mention in many of the reports, and in recent weeks the story has also been piked up by the English media.

Udinese were looking for €40m for De Paul in the summer market, and that figure was too high as far as Leeds United were concerned.

There had been claims that Udinese could come down from such a lofty figure in the January window, perhaps ready to accept something closer to the €30m mark.

However, it would appear that isn’t the case, at least if the Serie A club are to be taken at their word.

Padova Sport, part of the Gazzetta dello Sport group, who mention Leeds United interest in their report, quote Udinese vice-president Stefano Campoccia as saying: “He’s a treasure and treasures cost. The proposals did not reach our request, for less than 40 million euros he does not move.

“The economy is in trouble: when Mr. Covid goes away we can talk about it in depth. De Paul is an important player, the make-up of the team is pretty clear, I hope he can return to scoring soon to the delight of our team. He is a player who has shown his great value and I am convinced that he will prove it again with the black and white jersey.”

The 26-year-old midfielder has three goals and three assists in 18 matches so far this season. De Paul’s contract lasts until June 2024, so there’s no pressure on Udinese in that regard.
