On June 28th, La Provence said Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has held initial talks with Marseille and he’s enthusiastic about the possibility of joining them this summer.

A week later, the same outlet stated the 24-year-old wants to leave Leeds for the Ligue 1 side.

The French club are looking for a new stopper as Pau López, who is in talks with Como, is set to leave them.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who state they have identified the Leeds star, RC Lens’ Brice Samba, Villarreal’s Filip Jørgensen and Las Palmas’ Álvaro Valles as the targets.

It’s claimed Marseille president Pablo Longoria has started working on the possibility of signing one of these players. He’s held initial discussions with them to find out information including their availability, salary demands and the desire to join the club.

Meslier joined Leeds from FC Lorient initially on loan in 2019 and his stay there was made permanent a year later, when Marcelo Bielsa was in charge at Elland Road.

He trained and player under Bielsa for over 30 months at Leeds and Marseille view this as one of the advantages.

At the same time, there are some disadvantages, including the Frenchman’s ‘enormous salary’.

There’s no mention of any figure, but L’Equipe say it’s around what former Marseille star Steve Mandanda earned when he was at his peak. Therefore, Meslier has dropped down the Ligue 1 side’s target list.
