Luís Boa Morte has given a long interview to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, with various topics from his career covered.
He revealed the shock of Arsenal wanting to sign him after he’d been on loan from Sporting to a side in Portugal’s fourth division, and that Fulham is the club which has touched him the most.
O Jogo were always going to ask about transfers that were missed, and that’s when Liverpool and Newcastle United got a mention.
Asked about offers he received during his career, Boa Morte told O Jogo: “There was the option of Liverpool, but, as I still had a contract and was going to cost around six million, they preferred Zenden, who at the time was a free player. Newcastle, Bordeaux and Saint-Étienne were also possibilities.”
Boudewijn Zenden moved to Liverpool in 2005, when Boa Morte was at Fulham and enjoying his football. There’s no indication regarding when the Newcastle United opportunity arose.
Now 46-years-of-age, Boa Morte is working as a coach. He left a role with Marco Silva’s staff at Fulham earlier this year and is now senior manager of the Guinea-Bissau national side.
There’s obviously plenty of time to progress further and perhaps we’ll see the Portuguese coach back in English football at some point.
