Last summer, Chelsea allowed Ethan Ampadu to join RB Leipzig on a season-long loan deal.
Julian Nagelsmann didn’t give the Wales international regular opportunities as the defender made only seven appearances (two starts) in all competitions for the Bundesliga side.
Prior to football being suspended because of the Covid-19 crisis, the 19-year-old was struggling with a back problem.
According to Bild, the Blues owned player has been undergoing a ‘back rehab’ with the Leipzig physios.
They further add Ampadu ‘has a genetic predisposition to back problems, and now there is probably an additional strain’.
Although it’s unclear if and when football will resume, the teenager will never kick a ball for Leipzig again. It’s claimed the defender doesn’t want to ‘torture himself’, which is why he wants to return Chelsea and prepare well for next season.
Bild states his return to Chelsea was a ‘foregone conclusion’, which is why both clubs never took any interest in working out a potential deal.
The newspaper are also of the belief Ampadu will become a ‘mainstay’ under Frank Lampard next season.
Time should tell…
