Barcelona want to offload İlkay Gündoğan to lighten their wage bill and Manchester City have been pushed forward as an option this summer.
Earlier today, Mundo Deportivo reported the midfielder earns €20m gross per year at the Camp Nou. It was also stated Manchester City are the favourite club to sign him.
RAC 1, a Catalan radio station, backs that up as they state the 33-year-old’s move to the Etihad is now ‘imminent’.
There’s been claims of interest from Galatasaray and a few Middle East clubs, including Al-Nassr.
RAC 1 makes no mention of these clubs but insists that the German ‘prioritises’ joining the Premier League winners. They further add Pep Guardiola has given his approval for the Citizens to go ahead with this deal.
The former Borussia Dortmund man spent seven years at Manchester City and played a vital role in helping them win the treble during the 2022/23 season. Guardiola and his side were keen on retaining him, but he left them for Barcelona as a free agent in 2023.
A year later, Gündoğan could be set to return to Manchester City and his transfer is said to be ‘imminent’. So unless the Catalan media are getting ahead of themselves, this move looks on the way.
