Brighton & Hove Albion’s Alexis Mac Allister is in contention to start for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup following an injury setback to Tottenham Hotspur’s Giovani Lo Celso.

The Spurs owned player is on loan at Villarreal and suffered an injury last weekend. TyC Sports state Tottenham want Lo Celso to undergo a surgery, but he wants to avoid it since going under a knife will force him to miss the FIFA tournament.

Lionel Scaloni and his medical staff are aware it is very difficult for the Tottenham man to make it to Qatar. If Lo Celso’s fails to regain full fitness, the Brighton player could be one of the alternatives.

TyC Sports state Mac Allister could compete with Sevilla’s Papu Gómez for a place in La Albiceleste’s playing XI for the first match against Saudi Arabia.

Mac Allister has scored four goals from 12 league starts for the Seagulls this season. His position at the club was not impacted after Roberto De Zerbi replaced Graham Potter at The Amex in September.

The Brighton midfielder’s ‘great presence’ in the Premier League ‘could catapult’ him into Argentina’s lineup, in the absence of Lo Celso. That’s because Mac Allister has ‘gained a lot of ground Scaloni’s consideration’ over the last year.
