Ianis Hagi has struggled to find a place in Philippe Clement’s plans at Rangers this season. He’s been limited to 50 minutes of action from two league appearances and was an unused substitute on two more occasions this season.
Philippe Clement has left the winger out of Rangers’ Europa League squad. Last month, former FCSB and AEK Athens manager Dumitru Dumitriu asked Hagi to leave Ibrox in the winter market.
Dumitriu has been joined by Adrian Mutu to urge the 26-year-old to move away from Rangers. The former Chelsea forward and Romanian journalist Horia Ivanovici discussed the attacking midfielder’s situation at Rangers for Fanatik.
Last season, Hagi was on loan at Deportivo Alavés and he failed to impress for the La Liga side. Mutu is puzzled why the Romania international didn’t leave Rangers in the summer window.
“I don’t know, that’s Ianis’ problem. I haven’t spoken to him. I haven’t spoken to Gică either. It really is an unpleasant situation. He should be asked why he insists on staying. I don’t think it suits anyone not to play,” he said.
“Regardless of how much money you earn, I’ve seen players, and I fall into that category, if I don’t at least have the chance, because he often doesn’t get the chance to train with the big team, of course I would like to change places.”
The former Romania international suggests the Scottish club have tried to push Hagi out of Ibrox.
“When you fall out of favour with the club, because these things happen, when the club pays you, but doesn’t let you do your job,” Mutu explained.
“Why? Because they bet on your desire to play, and that’s what all the players want, and then you make a decision to leave, of course, which is financially favourable to the club.”
“Ianis Hagi is paid, but he is not allowed to do his job, that means he is humiliated by the club by calling him, giving him a chance, he was unlucky with that red card, but he played decently, and then you send him back to the second team.”
Mutu believes his compatriot will leave Rangers in January, to revive his career at a new club.
“Of course he will make a decision. I’m sure he will make a decision in the winter because it’s a complicated situation,” he added.
“If I could give him one piece of advice, it would be that he has to play. Let him go, sort out his problems there, play somewhere, because he has been on loan before. The current situation is hurting him.”
